Baptism

Baptism is a pivotal step in the journey of faith, signifying a public declaration of one’s commitment to follow Jesus Christ.

At Life Church, we believe that baptism is not only an act of obedience to Christ’s command but also a powerful symbol of the transformation that takes place when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour.

What is Baptism?

Baptism is a sacrament that represents dying to our old selves and rising to new life in Christ. In Romans 6:3-4, the Apostle Paul explains, “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

This act of immersion in water symbolizes the cleansing of sins and the beginning of a new life committed to following Christ's teachings. As believers, we identify with Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection through baptism, signifying our unity with Him and the Christian community.

Questions about Baptism

  • Baptism is a public declaration of your faith in Jesus Christ. It's an outward expression of an inward transformation, showing your commitment to live according to Christ's teachings. In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commanded His disciples, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Baptism aligns you with this mission, indicating your willingness to follow Jesus.

  • It's important to understand that baptism does not make you a believer; it simply demonstrates your faith to the world. Faith in Jesus Christ is what makes you a believer.

Baptism is the public declaration of that faith. As Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Your salvation is a result of God's grace, not because of the act of baptism itself.

  • The best time to get baptized is when you have made a personal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and understand the significance of baptism. This step is significant and should be made with a sincere heart and a clear understanding of its meaning. If you feel ready to publicly declare your faith and join the Christian community, it's time to consider baptism.
