A New Thing

Embracing New Beginnings: A Perspective for the New Year

As we stand at the threshold of a new year, it’s only natural to reflect on the journey behind and anticipate the road ahead. In the midst of resolutions and aspirations, there’s a timeless source of guidance that transcends the conventional wisdom of New Year’s resolutions. Let’s explore three points from Isaiah 43:18-19 that can illuminate our path as we step into the new year.

Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
— Isaiah 43:18-19 ESV

1. Release the weight of the past

As we usher in the new year, God invites us to release the burdens of our past. In a world that often clings to the mistakes and setbacks, this wisdom encourages us to break free from the chains that bind us. Just as a snake sheds its old skin to embrace the new, we are called to let go of yesterday’s disappointments and failures. By doing so, we make room for the “new thing” that God is doing in our lives.

2. Embrace the new thing God is doing

Change can be daunting, especially when we can’t foresee what lies ahead. However, Isaiah reassures us that God is continually at work, even in the midst of uncertainty. The promise is clear: God is orchestrating a new chapter in our lives. Embracing the unknown becomes an act of faith, a step towards a future filled with divine purpose and unexpected blessings.

3. Look to Jesus for guidance

In a world bombarded with self-help advice and motivational slogans, Isaiah directs our gaze to the ultimate source of wisdom—Jesus. While resolutions often rely on personal strength, Isaiah reminds us that God is the one making a way for us. Looking to Jesus means seeking His guidance in every decision, acknowledging His role as the one who opens doors and paves the path for us.

As the year draws to a close, let’s anchor ourselves in the timeless truths of Isaiah 43:18-19. Release the weight of the past, embrace the new things God is doing, and look to Jesus for guidance in the upcoming year. In doing so, we step into the new year with hope, purpose, and a sense of divine direction that transcends the ordinary resolutions of the world. May this coming year be filled with the joy of discovering the “new thing” that God is bringing forth in our lives.
