Are We Worshiping the Wrong Things?

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. We spend our time chasing after success, approval, possessions, and comfort, often without realising how these pursuits shape our hearts. But have you ever stopped to ask: What am I really worshiping?

God’s Purpose for Us

God created us to worship Him. The Bible makes it clear that humanity’s ultimate purpose is to glorify God and live in relationship with Him. However, we often turn our hearts to other things. Instead of worshiping the Creator, we elevate what He has created. When we put our trust and devotion in temporary things—money, career, status—we exchange the truth for a lie (Romans 1:21-23).

God’s Revelation in Creation

Romans 1:18-20 tells us that God has revealed Himself through creation. The beauty of the natural world, the vastness of the universe, and even the longing in our hearts all point to Him. Yet, humanity often suppresses this truth, ignoring His call and choosing to live for lesser things. This rejection of God’s truth has serious consequences.

God’s Just Response

God’s wrath is not arbitrary or unjust; it is a response to our rejection of Him. His holiness demands justice, and His wrath reveals the seriousness of sin. Misplaced worship leads to brokenness—both in our relationship with God and in our own lives. But His justice also comes with an invitation: to turn back to Him, the One who can satisfy our deepest needs and longings.

Recenter Your Worship

So, how do we respond? We start by recentering our hearts on God. Ask yourself: Is what I’m worshiping truly worth it? Are the things I’m chasing giving me peace and purpose, or are they leaving me empty? God’s love and holiness invite us to put Him at the centre of our lives.

Practical Steps to Recenter on God

  • Spend Daily Time with God: Begin each day with prayer and Bible reading. Let His Word guide your thoughts and actions.

  • Examine Your Priorities: Look at how you’re spending your time, energy, and resources. Adjust where needed to put God first.

  • Serve Others: Reflect God’s love by caring for others, which is an act of worship.

  • Engage in Worship: Join a local church community and regularly participate in worship and fellowship.

A Final Thought

God is calling us to refocus our lives on Him. Replacing possessions, approval, or success with His truth and love will bring lasting peace and purpose. So today, ask yourself: What would my life look like if God was at the centre of everything I do?

Let this be a reminder to worship the Creator, not creation. Share this message to encourage others to realign their hearts and lives with God.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
— Romans 1:18-23
