What is Easter All About?
Easter is a very special time of year when we celebrate one of the most important things in the Bible—the resurrection of Jesus. It’s a time when we remember how Jesus died and came back to life to show us God's amazing love for us.
If you’re a parent, Easter is a wonderful time to help your kids understand who Jesus is and why His resurrection is so important. Here’s a simple way to explain the Easter story to your little ones.
1. The Easter Story: Jesus Died for Us
The Easter story starts with Jesus. Jesus wasn’t just any person—He is the Son of God. He came to teach people about God’s love and to show them how to live. He performed many miracles and helped people, but not everyone was happy with Him. Some people didn’t like what Jesus was teaching and wanted to stop Him.
So, they decided to arrest Jesus and put Him on a cross, where He died. But Jesus didn’t stay dead. He had a bigger plan, and God was going to do something amazing.
2. The Amazing News: Jesus Came Back to Life!
After Jesus died, His friends were very sad. They thought it was the end of the story. But then, on the third day, something incredible happened—Jesus rose from the dead! He was alive again! This was God’s plan all along.
In Matthew 28:5-6 (ESV), an angel told the women who came to visit Jesus’ tomb: “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, as He said.” Jesus had risen just as He promised!
3. Why Does Jesus’ Resurrection Matter?
The resurrection of Jesus is important because it shows us that Jesus is stronger than death. When Jesus died on the cross, He took the punishment for our sins, the things we do that hurt God. But His rising from the dead shows us that God has the power to forgive us and give us new life.
In John 11:25 (ESV), Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live.” This means that because of Jesus’ resurrection, we can have eternal life with God forever, and we don’t need to be afraid of death.
Explaining Easter to Your Kids
As a parent, you can help your children understand the Easter story by sharing these key ideas in simple terms:
Jesus died for our sins: Explain that Jesus died because He loves us and wants to take away the bad things we do.
Jesus rose from the dead: Emphasize that Jesus came back to life because God has power over death and wants to give us new life.
We can have eternal life: Help your kids understand that because Jesus rose from the dead, we can have a relationship with God that lasts forever.
You can use simple phrases like, “Jesus died for us, and because He loves us, He came back to life to show us that we can live forever with Him.”
Fun Activity: Resurrection Eggs
A fun way to help your kids understand the Easter story is by using Resurrection Eggs. These eggs symbolize key parts of the Easter story and help children connect the story to tangible objects.
Each egg represents a different part of Jesus’ journey:
A small cross (to represent Jesus’ death on the cross)
A piece of cloth (to represent Jesus’ body being wrapped and placed in the tomb)
A stone (to represent the large stone that was rolled away from Jesus’ tomb)
An empty egg (to represent the empty tomb, where Jesus rose from the dead)
The egg itself is a symbol of new life. Just like a chick comes to life from an egg, Easter represents the new life we receive through Jesus’ resurrection. The empty egg in the set represents the moment when Jesus’ followers found His tomb empty, proving He had risen.
As you open each egg with your kids, you can explain the significance of each item, helping them connect it to the bigger story of how Jesus gave His life for us and then conquered death, offering us new life through Him.
