Why Should I Believe in the Resurrection of Jesus?
For many, the story of Jesus’ resurrection can sound unbelievable, even though it is one of the most significant events in history. You might be wondering, Why should I believe that Jesus rose from the dead? It’s a question worth considering, and one that holds great significance—not just for the past, but for our lives today.
Let’s take a closer look at why the resurrection of Jesus is something that deserves our attention.
1. The Resurrection: more than a myth
First, it’s important to consider the historical evidence surrounding the resurrection. The event is not only recorded in the Bible, but there are also multiple sources that suggest Jesus’ followers genuinely believed they had witnessed His return to life.
Why would people, who were initially fearful and hiding (John 20:19), suddenly transform into bold leaders, risking their lives to preach about the resurrection of Jesus? Early Christians faced intense persecution, and many of them died for their belief. They weren’t profiting from this claim—it cost them everything.
One of the strongest pieces of evidence is the empty tomb and the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus. These events were recorded by several witnesses. The apostle Paul shares in 1 Corinthians 15:3-8 (ESV): "For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared also to me."
Hundreds of people saw Jesus alive after His death, and many of them were still alive when Paul wrote this letter. People don’t die for a story they know isn’t true.
2. The Message of the Resurrection
The resurrection of Jesus isn’t just a historical event—it’s a message of hope for all people. It’s a declaration that death does not have the final word. If Jesus rose from the dead, He has power over death, sin, and all the things that can overwhelm us in life.
In Romans 6:9 (ESV), it says: "We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over Him."
This is not just a story from the past—it’s a truth that impacts our lives today. The resurrection offers us freedom and new life. If Jesus overcame death, He can offer us hope beyond this life.
3. What Does This Mean for You?
So, what does the resurrection mean for you personally? If Jesus truly rose from the dead, it changes everything. It means there is hope beyond death, a way to find peace in a troubled world, and forgiveness for all that weighs us down.
In John 11:25-26 (ESV), Jesus Himself said: "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die."
The resurrection of Jesus is not just a moment in history—it’s a promise of eternal life and a relationship with God that can change the direction of your life. If this is true, it offers more than just an interesting story. It offers new life, new hope, and the chance to experience the world differently.
